It is late at night and your analytical paper is due tomorrow. You don’t have much time and you have written one before. What do you do?
Today, we are going to go over step by step the proper way to write and format an analytical paper.
- Begin By Understanding The Objective
Before you can begin writing you must first understand why you are writing. Typically the purpose for composing an analytical essay is to explore and consider an issue carefully. Most of the type an analytical paper is written on a piece of literature, a piece of academic writing, or a film.
- Choose An Approach
Assuming, that you have already examined the material that has been assigned for analysis the first step to writing is choosing what you are going to write about. Try to pinpoint one idea or concept to focus on. Can you develop this idea into a strong thesis?
- Write Your Thesis Statement
After you have identified a good topic to write on begin to compose your thesis. This thesis will be included in the introduction paragraph of your analytical paper. It should be one or two sentences long and very clearly explain what your analytical paper is going to be about.
- Introduce Your Evidence Points/Examples
Now that you have a thesis to write about the next step is to back it up with evidence points and examples from the source material. These points should be briefly introduced within the first paragraph and then expanded upon in the body paragraphs.
- Construct Your Body Paragraphs
The next step is to compose your body paragraphs (3 or more). These should stay on topic, include properly cites points from the source material, and reflect back to the original thesis.
- Wrap It Up
Now most of the hard work is done. The last paragraph aka the conclusion should be a direct mirroring of the introduction paragraph. You thesis should be re-stated using different words. Your supporting arguments must also be summarized. The concluding paragraph should never introduce any new ideas. It should also include any final thoughts or conclusions that can be drawn from analyzing the source material.
Formatting an analytical research paper is really no different than writing any other type of essay. The important things to remember are to stay on topic and cite your sources accurately. You also want to be extremely specific when using examples from the material being analyzed.
