Norms Violation

A norms violation is when a person goes against a certain way that culture and society expects one to act.  When going against the norm it means that you are doing something that is not acceptable to one’s society or their culture.  A norm violation is where someone does something that is not normal.  Also, norms violation is when someone does something rude or does something in public that is embarrassing to them and others. Norms violation is when someone does an action in public that they know should not have been done in public. A norms violation is when a person does something very rude in public that their mother taught them not to do in public.

One prime example of a norms violation is when a person speaks to everyone they meet in public.  Another example would be when a person does not use a tissue to blow their nose, but uses their sleeve to do so.  Norm violations are just common things that individuals do on a daily basis and fail to do those common things correctly.  Another example of a norms violation is when a person impedes on another’s personal space.  Also, another norms violation, is when an individual eats a certain dish with the wrong utensil.  Like eating soup with a butter knife, instead of, a soupspoon.

Social norms are defined as one’s cultural beliefs, societal beliefs, and what they believe to be important to them.  Social norms range from country to country, culture to culture, and society to society.  What one may consider a social norm in the black community, may not be the same social norm in a Korean community.  Social norms are shaped by our ethnic background, upbringing, and our cultural beliefs.  For example, many Asian cultures believe in bowing to each other when first meeting each other.  But, in American culture, it is common practice to shake each other hands when first meeting each other.  In many European cultures, they believe in shaking hands and kissing each other on the cheeks during first meetings.

So, social norms and their violations range from culture to culture.  Norm violations range from culture to culture and society to society depending each group’s beliefs and customs.  But, at times some norm violations go across the board from culture to culture, like opening the door for strangers and holding the doors for others. This is a norms violation no matter where you go in the world, it is common courtesy to hold the door open for someone behind you, or open the door for someone.  In conclusion, a norms violation can be seen as a violation of something that you are expected to do in a certain way, and when you fail to do so you are violating a common social norm.
